Rumors that Hyundai will abandon R&D director Albert Biermann

Reports Korea’s time say the Hyundai Motor Group may consider reshuffling some of its management positions, with a decision due by the end of the week. The change comes as the group’s brands hope to make further progress in the “mobility” market, sources say.
The Hyundai Motor Group, made up of Hyundai itself, along with the Kia and Genesis brands, is considering replacing two of its most prominent executives, both based overseas. Albert Biermann, president of Hyundai-Kia’s R&D division, and Peter Schreyer, president and head of design management at Hyundai, may both seek new positions shortly.
Biermann has been a driving force in many programs that have ushered Hyundai and Kia into a new era. The former head of BMW’s M department joined the company in 2015 and then worked on much-vaunted projects such as the performance-driven N division of Kia Stinger and Hyundai.
Biermann’s work with the N division was particularly transformative for the brand. Once upon a time, Hyundai was known almost exclusively for building affordable grocery stores. Now the brand has a cavalcade of sporty models, receiving good reviews and putting it in serious competition with longtime rivals like Honda and Volkswagen.
Schreyer has had longer sleeves, joining the company in 2006 after working as a designer for Audi and Volkswagen. The design head has been credited with reinventing the aesthetics of the Kia brand, and the âtiger noseâ grille in particular, which has long been a sore spot on many Kia models. Schreyer’s hand guided the design of many new vehicles across the group, including the Hyundai i30, the Kia K5 sedan and the Genesis G90.
With Hyundai and its related companies bringing some incredibly sharp designs to the market right now and killing people at auto shows, it may be surprising that an upheaval is on the agenda. A source cited by the Korea weather indicated that this was part of a larger corporate move towards the future, stating that âHyundai Motor Group is very inclined to name new faces at a time when the group tries to transform itself into a manufacturer of mobility and not just a car manufacturer “.
No matter who the âmobility builderâ is, there are many who hope that Hyundai, Kia and Genesis will continue their momentum in the years to come. People want beautiful, attractive cars, and the Hyundai Motor Group has delivered on their promises so far. Time will tell if this trend continues. In the meantime, expect Hyundai to announce a decision by Friday.
