Rosalia, Lizzo and Cardi B wrap up Miami’s best art week
MIAMI BEACH, Florida
The oversized evenings and star-studded shows surrounding Miami’s Art Basel ended this weekend with performances by Rosalia, Lizzo, Cardi B and rocker Lenny Kravitz.
The annual event, which was canceled last year during the pandemic, is an extension of the prestigious art exhibition in Switzerland. But over the years Miami has given its own spin on the affair, which has become a celebrity magnet. Everyone from Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Joe Jonas has been spotted in the city.
The highlight of the week was Louis Vuitton’s first-ever American fashion show on Tuesday. But the lavish affair, where guests were transported to an island by private yacht, turned into a touching tribute after the sudden death of legendary designer Virgil Abloh, 41, just days before the show. Kid Cudi and Erykah Badu performed at an after-party where dozens of dancing red drones set the skyline ablaze to write “Virgil Was Here”.
Fashion label Burberry and W magazine hosted a party attended by models Karlie Kloss and Candice Swanepoel, as well as Camila Coelho, A $ AP Ferg and Meadow Walker.
Rosalia gave a surprise performance on Friday night to celebrate Chanel’s iconic scent. The French fashion house has teamed up with artist Es Devlin for a multisensory sculptural installation comprising a forest of more than 1,000 plants and trees. Before the show, Chanel hosted a private dinner attended by Pharrell Maluma, Leon Bridges, Joe Jonas and the HAIM singer trio.
The fashion brand’s Five Echoes installation is free and open to the public until December 21.
Cardi B performed on Saturday night to launch her new line of vodka-infused whipped cream. The rapper sprayed Whipshots in the mouths of Goodtime Hotel fans. Offset, Mary J. Blige and Timbaland were among the guests. After the event, Cardi B and her husband Offset headed to Hyde Beach at SLS South Beach for the MAXIM party where the couple danced as 112 performed their old school hit “Peaches and Cream”. Karrueche, Austin Mahone and Taye Diggs were also in the crowd.
After hours, more than 500 fans lined up around the block to watch rapper Meek Mill’s sold-out show at E11EVEN. He didn’t take the stage until 3:30 a.m. Cardi B, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nina Agdal, Karrueche, Migos and Marshmello stayed for the late night performance.
The official Art Basel fair drew 60,000 visitors this year, according to a statement, but thousands more attended various art exhibitions throughout the week. At Art Miami, a $ 4 million Banksy sale, a phenomenal 10-year-old painter and an 18-karat gold avocado bagel toast on sale for $ 2.9 million at the Rother Gallery generated a buzz.
Ultra-futuristic Paramount Miami Worldcenter even teamed up with artist M. Glue to organize a scavenger hunt for street trash turned into valuable works of art.
And in a week where art often borders on the absurd – remember the infamous $ 120,000 anana pieces of duct tape – Miami’s DJ Khaled dropped “bling wings” topped with dust. 24 karat gold and edible diamonds to promote his restaurant.
Swizz Beatz has teamed up with American Express to bring back “Women in Art,” by commissioning a live installation by artist Tanda Francis at an event on Saturday night. The credit card company also hosted a private performance by Lizzo at The Miami Beach Edition.
Dr. Deepak Chopra has teamed up with “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke for an intimate morning meditation by launching her Metaverse For Good platform and NFT drop. At night, Alicia Keys also led a guided meditation where mechanical flowers hanging from the ceiling opened and closed like inhals and exhales. Dressed in a neon yellow dress and thigh-high boots at Superblue, Miami’s experiential art center, the Grammy winner performed songs from her new album due out next week.
DiCaprio, Marc Anthony, Soleil Moon Frye and Alicia Machado helped their friend Sean Penn raise $ 1.6 million in a Thursday night fundraiser to benefit Penn’s CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), in particular its crisis response programs across Latin America, including Haiti and Brazil.
DiCaprio also showed up at art collector Wayne Boich’s annual party, along with Venus and Serena Williams and Latin boy group CNCO. Kravitz took the stage for a 75-minute concert. Rapper TI closed the evening.
Even Playboy stepped into the action to promote their new lifestyle brand BIG BUNNY. Guests Cardi B, Lizzo and Charlie XCX attended a surreal ball, centered on the idea that pleasure is a basic human right. The new collection pays homage to artist Salvador Dal who was commissioned for the magazine in 1973 and 1974.
Across town, actress Eva Longoria took on the role of mixologist at a Friday night party to promote her new tequila brand Casa Del Sol, pouring drinks for attendees including her longtime friend. Serena Williams.
Rapper Young Thug hosted an NFT party on Saturday night with Von Dutch in trendy Wynwood.
Other celebrities include Maroon Five’s Adam Levine and wife Victoria Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo sitting with friend Marc Anthony at David Grutman and Pharrell Swan’s restaurant. Rauw Alejandro and Rosalia also spent a romantic evening there.
Vera Wang, a regular in Basel, who wore a bespoke gray silk Vera dress, also dined at the restaurant with her fellow fashion designers Donna Karen and Giancarlo Stanton. The record producer and DJ Diplo toured the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science with a group of family and friends.
