Five TikTok Accounts to Follow for Interior Design Inspiration
Pinterest, YouTube, and Instagram have been the inspiration for interior design in recent years, but TikTok is starting to compete with these platforms. While many people associate TikTok with Generation Z dance trends, it’s also a great place for interior designers, hobbyists, and experts to share tips, how-to tips, errands, and more.
I spoke with five interior design creators on TikTok to find out how they started their accounts, what inspires them to create content as well as how they cultivated their audience. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your own home or trying to develop a similar account, here are five accounts to follow on TikTok.
While Katie Mack may be known for having the most followers on Instagram, there’s no doubt her TikTok will soon catch up. After all, she didn’t open her account until January 2021, and she already has nearly 30,000 subscribers. Her whimsical yet chic candy-colored house is the inspiration for both accounts. âWhen we bought our first home in July 2017, I knew I wanted to document the decorating process on Instagram. So I did, and it just took off! I started to get a lot of great feedback and features so I decided to go all out and realized I was completely fulfilled doing this. I started posting everyday and became friends with a community of other decor lovers and the rest is history, âshe tells me.
Mack really appreciates the creative challenge that this new platform brings. âI think a lot of trends are so fun and I like to come up with a different version of the audio or music that has been used before. It’s a really fun creative outlet and it seems a lot less serious than Instagram.
When it comes to creating social media content, she believes being yourself is the most important factor. âI think letting yourself and your process be a bit uninhibited is really the way to create a unique video. Gravitate towards what you love and don’t worry about what other people think or what is popular. Take risks! Just be natural and show who you are and how your home reflects it. My most popular video is just a 15 second clip of my cooking. I think it took off because it was so polarizing. People liked it or hated it and I agree with either because they don’t live here.
With 6.1 million subscribers on TikTok, Katie Feeney may be known for her dance and lip-syncing videos, but she’s also on her way to becoming a design influencer. Penn State Freshman recently collaborated with Dormify to design a ‘pastel Danish’ style dormitory. âI (along with my friends and even my new roommate) are all huge Dormify fans. I’m also about a month away from going to college, so designing my dorm was really a priority, âshe says.
Feeney’s bedroom features a cheerful mix of fun pastel wall prints, ivy string lights to set the mood, and a soft yellow floral comforter. Everything is available for purchase on Dormify. Feeney’s bedroom is not only the perfect place to study, but it’s also the perfect place for the social media star to create new content.
Unsurprisingly, Feeney took to social media to get ideas for the design of the space. âI take a lot of inspiration from Pinterest. It is very useful when you have a certain aesthetic in mind, to explore creative options and images afterwards. It’s also amazing to have real-time feedback from my community of fans / followers. Commenting on posts literally becomes a back-and-forth conversation with everyone. It’s awesome.”
Like many TikTok users, Chelsea Scott started out on Instagram and started posting on multiple platforms. In February 2021, one of his videos started going viral. âThis led me to delve into the world of DIY and interior design on TikTok, and I’m so glad I did. I love how TikTok creators and content can be. real and raw, and I’m always learning something new that I would never have encountered otherwise. I hope I can be a source of inspiration and information to others as well, “she says.
The content on the account spans the gamut from tutorials and how-tos, products, favorites, before and after videos, as well as DIY and home humor. âI always like to try new transitions, which are especially fun for the before and after videos. I also like being able to take a trendy sound and put my own DIY / interior design touch into it.
As for how Scott designed his unique grip, it’s an interesting story. âI started college in 2005 as an interior design major, but the program I was enrolled in was more of an interior design program. I was interested, but I was more interested in the visual aspect of the design compared to the bones of the structure. I changed my specialization after about a year and a half for visual merchandising. While I was thinking about the names of my handle, I was chatting with a friend who was also in the same interior design program as me and who also changed specialization. We joked that we were literally dropouts in interior design, and the name of the handle was born.
Chrissy Horton, like many other design influencers, created her TikTok account during the pandemic. She focuses her content on providing resources for mothers looking for doable and practical ways to create a beautiful home. âI will show viewers how to create an organized, stylish and functional space that can meet my children’s needs and objects while staying true to my style,â Horton tells me.
The event planner and mom also love to share tablscape tips. âOne of my biggest goals with this account is to prove that you don’t need a lot of things to have the design of your dreams, whether it’s decorating your living room or setting the table for a dinner party! I’m sharing ways to reuse and give a makeover to items you already own.
With nearly 300,000 subscribers and 6.3 million likes, Horton has learned the secret to growing his account very quickly. âI try to get straight to the point in the first three seconds. Each video has a title, so the viewer immediately knows what they are going to learn. Other than that, I always try to be nice, genuine and keep it short and sweet, âshe says.
However, Horton believes the best way to create content is to be unique. âThere are so many designers out there, but there is only one you! Don’t compromise your style, your passion and your knowledge for points of view. If you have a video that goes viral based on content you typically don’t cover, you’ll be gaining subscribers for the wrong reasons. Not only will this hamper your engagement, but the audience that comes from that viral video may not be the one you’re trying to target. ”
With nearly 140,000 subscribers, Gilla Nordike proves that you don’t have to be Gen Z or a Millennial to create great TikTok videos. She was inspired to create her account when her 20-year-old daughter suggested it. “I said ‘no way I’m too old’ and she convinced me to create one anyway. From that point on I was hooked. I realized how many people needed. help with their home It was a way to give them advice from designers who would help them with their own home and how to do it, even if you are on a budget.
Nordike has a variety of content on its page, including designer tips such as curtain hanging height, carpet placement, furniture placement, designer trends, recommendation videos, and races. âI love sharing interior decorating videos on how to set up a coffee table or centerpiece, sofa table etc. I throw a few fun ones into the mix of how I squeeze in. the house with the interior decoration so that my husband could not see. “
However, she doesn’t have a specific strategy: âI just create content to help my followers know how to make their homes look good and organized,â she tells me. “I help them find ways to find the things they love and make their home beautiful and something they can be proud of even if they are on a budget.”
