Evergreen High School design team shares exterior and interior sketches of new school
New Evergreen High School Design Project Sketch, West View, Main Entrance, Bassetti Architects, January 2022.
UPDATE: Evergreen High School’s design team recently released new exterior and interior sketches of the White Center Public High School remodel.
Money from the 2016 Highline Public School Bond funds the design of the new Evergreen High School. Architects were selected and design work began in 2019, paused in 2020 due to the pandemic, and then resumed in fall 2021.
On January 20, 2022, Bassetti Architects met with Evergreen’s Design Review Board via Zoom. Architects, staff, and community members reviewed their progress, then discussed a slightly revised site plan that depicts the near-complete schematic design.
Here is more of an update by Highline Public Schools:
The main change since the December meeting was to move the tennis courts in the design from the west side to the south east part of the site. This was driven primarily by working with the existing topography, which saves costs by limiting the amount of dirt that needs to be moved on or off site and reducing the need for retaining walls. With this change, the existing car park to the west can be used with minimal reconfiguration. It reduces the number of parking lots at the heart of the site. Revisions focus visitors on the main entrance. Additionally, the courtyards between and around the buildings show a later development of the design.
The architects summarized the images that the committee highlighted in the previous meeting. The most frequent comments included: a warm and welcoming environment; use of wood to evoke warmth; trees, especially conifers to enhance the school name and integrate the natural landscape; the importance of daylight; and a desire to bring together indoor and outdoor spaces for school and community.
The committee reviewed draft floor plans for common areas, courtyards, educational spaces and administrative spaces. In breakout sessions, committee members provided feedback on what they liked or disliked.
The review committee will meet again in Augustat the end of the next design phase for architects – design development.
NEXT STEPS FOR DESIGN
Next steps this spring and summer include:
- Schematic design report.
- Cost estimation and budget reconciliation.
- Third-party value engineering process.
- District review of schematic design documents.
- District Approval and Notice to Proceed to Design Development Phase
- Ongoing educational programming meetings with school and department staff to refine floor plans and school design to match school needs and district standards, keeping in mind the need for future flexibility.
CONSTRUCTION DEPENDS ON VOTER APPROVAL OF FUTURE BOND
The timing of additional efforts will be dictated by a school board decision at the end of the summer on whether to place the next school construction bond on the November 2022 ballots.
Community meetings to share the proposed Evergreen design and receive feedback are tentatively scheduled for September or October. The creation of construction documents for the new building could also begin in early fall.
If the school board decides to place a construction bond on the November ballots, and if the measure is approved, Evergreen’s current design schedule would make it possible to start construction in the fall of 2023, with the completion of the new school building possible by fall 2025, followed by demolition of the old building and construction of new fields in the southwestern part of the site in the 2025-26 school year.
