ELAC Uni-Fi reference speakers raise the bar even higher
Andrew Jones from ELAC is a really scheming guy. The esteemed speaker designer could be engineered products for anyone at this point regardless of price, but his goal remains to create affordable speakers that sound great that the average music lover can. to afford. Its new range of ELAC Uni-Fi The Benchmark Speakers are another example of his engineering sense and desire to create more with less.
High-end audio needs more people like it; Paul Barton of PSB Speakers is another example of a globally respected speaker designer who has the resources to create whatever he wants, but prefers to focus on high quality speakers that people can afford.
I know it sounds like a dirty word right now, but “affordability” is the key to training a new generation of music listeners who genuinely care about better sound quality.
It’s tiring to read reviews of $ 10,000 speakers called “good deals” by the press. A $ 10,000 loudspeaker cannot be a good deal if less than 1% of the human race can afford it.
Andrew Jones understood this a long time ago. Most likely when he was at Pioneer and had to make cheap speakers that were way better than the competition below $ 300 / pair.
Audiophiles don’t want to hear this, but we have to break this exclusive club if we are to survive and grow.
No one is telling anyone to stop making $ 50,000 speakers, $ 25,000 turntables, or $ 10,000 amplifiers; there is a ripple effect with some brands towards more affordable products that more people can afford. Not enough brands, but there have never been so many great, affordable premium audio products as there are today.
The new ELAC Uni-Fi Reference speakers are another attempt to offer more for less and push the performance bar even higher.
“This new range removes the price limitations of the Uni-Fi 2.0 series as well as the technical barriers associated with this price level. The Uni-Fi Reference series offers significant performance enhancements such as the molded chassis for the concentric and bass drivers, new bass and concentric drivers, improved bracing, improved crossover design , as well as luxury cosmetics, ”said James Krodel, senior vice president of sales, ELAC.
So what is Nu?
ELAC Uni-Fi Reference speakers feature a new 4-inch concentric driver with molded chassis: a wide surround tweeter improves its low and high frequency extension allowing for better mixing with the mids.
An all new midrange driver with a large diameter voice coil, ventilated rear spider and new neodymium magnet provides better excursion and control over midrange frequencies. A new molded frame has been designed to minimize reflections back to the cone, which improves clarity.
The entire range also includes new 5.25 “and 6.5” aluminum woofers with die-cast chassis: dramatically improving low frequency reproduction, this new woofer features a compound curvature aluminum cone in one piece with a large vented magnet on the back providing improved linearity and better low frequency response than any old Uni-Fi bookshelf speaker.
A sophisticated 3-way crossover filter is part of every new enclosure: an entirely new design improves response linearity, improves driver integration, and delivers true nominal 6 ohm impedance for compatibility with virtually any AV receiver.
Inexpensive speakers generally save money on enclosure and bracing, but the new ELAC Uni-Fi Reference speakers feature full perimeter bracing: reducing the influence of the speakers on the speaker. audio quality, the Uni-Fi Reference range implements a complete bracing of the perimeter considerably reducing the vibrations of the speaker and the coloration of the cabinet.
Front Firing Ports – Placing the vents in the front of the bookcase and center speakers allows for greater placement freedom, even in tight spots like a cabinet or near a wall. Something super useful when setting up your speakers if you want to avoid overloading the room with too much bass.
