A • Home: How would you describe your design philosophy?
Mary Welch Fox Stasik: I would better describe my design philosophy as digging deep. … I like to dig into the desires, loves and desires of the client. Not really caring about current trends or what everyone else is doing. I think it’s about tapping into what really turns you on and turns you on and makes you happy and makes you excited to be in your space, and how you use your space. So my design philosophy is really, “What can we do in your space to make you the most functional and the happiest person?” “
RH: Can you offer specific design advice?
Stasik: To follow your heart and your instincts. I think it’s worth consulting with professionals and helping them help you discover what makes you happy and find united and cohesive ways to put that in place for you. But you know, tap into your guts. There is something for everyone, and as long as it’s organized you can make anything you love look beautiful.
RH: When you first meet a client, how do you determine what they want?
Stasik: I tell them about everything. What kind of art do they like, how they use their space, how do they move throughout their day, what do they like to do for fun, how do they travel, what makes them happy. Are there patterns, colors, things they like? … By truly walking every step of the way of your day. And get to the bottom of the things that bring you joy.
RH: Is there anything else we should know about you?
Stasik: Oh, my God, there’s a lot to know about me. I love art and sports, and I think that’s really important… taking 30 minutes for yourself each day to tap into what makes you feel good about yourself… [to] a little newer, and then you can go back out into the world and give your best to everyone.
HR: Did you come up with the name “Breaking Bland?”
Stasik: No, HGTV came up with the name, and I loved it. When they introduced it to me, I was more than excited about it. I wish I could take credit for that. I can not.
