5 interior ideas for a modern home
2021 interior design is synonymous with uncluttered and contemporary spaces. Traditionally, modern decor has meant following the “less is more” theory, where clean lines and form equal function. Today’s modern homes are more balanced, with a well-balanced mix of old and new. We see homes moving away from cold rooms with cut glass and gray, crushed velvet for a happy medium of warm neutrals paired with bold pops of color. If you’re looking for a home with the wow factor, follow these tips below and you’ll be on your way to nail the trend.
1. Restore your parts
Just because elegance can be chic doesn’t mean there’s no room for pre-loved items. Pick items you currently own that might need a bit of TLC, like regular carpet that needs it carpet repair, and restore it to its former glory. This is especially important for items with a high sentimental or monetary value. You don’t want those parts to go to waste, so just fit in with your modernization. A mix of old and new can work well, especially in older homes with more traditional architecture.
2. Update your color scheme
An easy way to revamp a space is to mix the color palette. Pantone color of the year 2021 is a beautifully modern combination of “Ultimate Gray” and “Illuminating”, which is a stunning sunshine yellow. Take inspiration from such a bold color clash and bring it into your own home.
3. Paneling and divided walls
Panels are generally considered traditional and classic, but they have made a comeback. The key is to update the trend with a twist. Heed tip number 2 and use contrasting colors. Why not add panels to the bottom half of a wall, then paint it in a reddish red. Use a dusty pink or tropical orange on the top of the wall to make a fearless statement. If you’re not a fan of paneling, a Dado track is a nice, low-key option. Something as simple as painting your baseboards can provide the split color effect more subtly.
4. Clean wood
Wood and natural materials give a beautiful base to a neutral-inspired room. Think of wooden shelves housing vases of fluffy pampas grass. If you’re up for a bigger renovation, update your kitchen with wood cabinetry. If you’re not ready to commit to an entire wood room, a wood accent chair or dining set gives the same cool vibe in a more modest way.
5. Update your accessories
Accessories can easily age a house. If you hang on to faded pillows or chipped photo frames and don’t think they’re worth restoring, donate them to charity and start over. Even something as simple as adding plants to floating shelves can totally transform a space and look more contemporary.
