4 more arrested in loan application problem involving Chinese nationals

Chennai, January 6 (PTI) Four other people, including an employee of a mobile phone service provider, were arrested by the city police in connection with the provision of more than 1,000 SIM cards to the accused in a case related to the operation of loan applications involving Chinese nationals. Two Chinese and as many Indians had previously been arrested for allegedly operating instant loan apps, following a complaint by a man here that he had been the victim of agony, abuse, threats and of harassment from online loan application companies for repayment with a higher interest rate. Investigations revealed that the SIM cards used by the defendants were fraudulently purchased by managers of a city-based digital company with the help of two people, including the territory sales manager of a mobile service provider. They bought 1,100 SIM cards and handed them over to the Chinese defendants, according to a statement from the city police. The required standard procedure involved in issuing SIM cards was not followed, police said citing an investigation. Cell phone numbers, used in loan enforcement operations, have been used to “intimidate and abuse” the person who could not repay and their contacts on their cell phone, he said. -he adds.
